Volunteering highlights

  • We won the Percy Gratwick VC Sports Excellence Trophy in 2009.
  • Developing juniors – particularly the implementation of Net, Set, Go! in 2009 to attract younger players, planning for the future of our Association – it is fantastic to watch our juniors develop, and have success like we did with seven of our girls being selected to represent the North West Region in Perth.
  • Increasing fundraising activities – helps the Association out on many levels, including increasing people’s sense of ownership over what we do – it means so much more if you’ve raised the money yourself.
  • Constantly increasing membership of Port Hedland Netball Association and marketing ourselves better to ensure our numbers continue to grow in the future – in 2005 two clubs had A Grade teams, in 2010 we have five clubs in the A Grade competition.
  • Successfully hosting the North West Championships for more than 300 people in 2009.
  • Rebuilding Spectres Netball Club – after being left with two players in 2006, we now have teams in all four grades, winning back-to-back B Grade and Junior Premierships, winning the 2008 A Grade Premiership, and being A Grade Runners-Up in 2007 and 2009.
  • On the court, personal highlights were winning the 2008 A Grade Premiership with my club, Spectres, and winning the 2005 A Grade North West Championship.
  • We have an absolutely sensational committee, with so much energy, enthusiasm and innovation – it’s an absolute pleasure to work with such a committed group of people.

Club and volunteering challenges

  • It’s always a challenge to attract and retain volunteers, and to ensure the workload is shared so that you don’t burn people out.
  • Attracting and retaining umpires is a significant challenge – though we now have eight badged umpires in our Association, which is fantastic – the game can’t go ahead without them.
  • Planning for the future – Port Hedland is still a very transient town, with people constantly coming and going – it is a challenge to ensure that the history and knowledge base of our Association is retained even when people leave.
  • Distance and costs – it is very expensive for us to travel to compete against others in the region and in the state. These are opportunities we need to provide to our athletes, to ensure we continue to develop our sport and provide pathways for our elite athletes to go further. We all know that travel and accommodation in the Pilbara is incredibly expensive, and this is a key challenge to sporting groups in Hedland.
