Jamal Bin Sulaiman

Jamal Bin Sulaiman

Jamal Bin Sulaiman is well on the way to playing cricket at the highest level and could well be the next Broome Rising Sports Star of the Year.

The 16-year-old recently won the MLC Country Cricket Charlie Sandstone Memorial Scholarship, an honour bestowed on young Aboriginal cricketers to help them with their development.

As part of the scholarship, Jamal attended the Perth Test in December, where he met renowned Western Australian players including Mitchell Johnson. Assistance with purchasing equipment and a few trips to Perth for specialised training were also part of the reward.

The talented all-rounder proved he was a worthy winner, excelling for Broome in the Under 16 Country Week championships in January. Jamal finished the week with nine wickets at an impressive average of 5.3. He also scored 78 runs.

It was a stellar season for the young man, who proved his talents as a valuable all-rounder, finishing average and aggregate bowling and batting runner up. He averaged 11 wickets at 4 with the ball and 116 runs at an average of 23.20 with the bat. His season for Wanderers in the local senior competition saw him claim his first five wicket haul in a Twenty20 match.

The Wanderers’ Tyrone Garstone says Jamal is already an integral part of the team’s bowling line-up and, more importantly, believes he has the right attitude to excel at a very high level.

Broome Junior Cricket Association President Les Mainwaring said Jamal was a tremendous player to watch either bowling, batting or fielding.

“He’s a wonderful ambassador for cricket generally and a wonderful role model for Aboriginal cricketers,” he said.

Jamal wants to study sports science in Perth when he finishes school. He is aware there is plenty of cricket to play in the city.

“I’ve been talking to the guys from the Imparja Indigenous cricket competition each year; I’m looking forward to possibly playing in the competition,” Jamal said.

Whether it be in Broome or Perth his main goal is a simple one.

“I want to keep playing cricket,” Jamal said.

The Broome Sports Awards will be held on 18 November 2012.
